In its inaugural year, the Westbound Horror Fest is looking to leave a mark on the local community not only through a three-day experiential event, but also by supporting the next generation of Utah filmmakers. Through this grant we hope to inspire student genre filmmakers to continue pursuing their dreams and transporting all of us to their wonderfully wild worlds.
To Qualify:
● Filmmaker(s) must be currently enrolled in a Utah college, university or other film program.
● Filmmaker(s) must still be enrolled in a Utah college, university or other film program in the month
of October.
● Filmmaker(s) must submit a short that fits into one of the following genres:
○ Horror, Science-fiction, Thriller/Suspense, Fantasy, Experimental
■ Animation and Documentary shorts will be accepted if they fall into one of the
genres above.
● Filmmaker(s) must approve the film to be screened at the film festival at no cost to the festival.
● Shorts must have been completed in the years 2020 or 2021.
● Shorts must be under 40 minutes in length.
● Shorts must be able to screen in DCP format and exhibition ready by August 30, 2021.
A selection of short films submitted will play as a part of our Utah Student Shorts Competition segment at the Fall 2021 festival. Our team of programmers will select one winning short from the segment which will be awarded a grant in the amount of $1,000 for the filmmaker’s next film project.
