To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps, 3 Generations is holding a video competition.

“Unless the world learns the lessons these pictures teach, night will fall. But (by God’s grace) we who live will learn.”

These are the closing words of German Concentration Camps Factual Survey (GCCFS), a documentary originally shot by Allied Soldiers during the 1945 liberation of the concentration camps, and finally completed and released by Sydney & Baron Bernstein in 2014. We want GCCFS, and this closing quote in particular, to be the inspiration for the films submitted to the competition.

How do we represent the atrocities of the Holocaust today to ensure the lessons learnt are never forgotten? What is the significance of representing atrocity? What are the challenges? What is the value of direct testimony? What does it mean to bear witness?

3 Generations invites young filmmakers, aged 18 to 30, to create a short video work (up to 4 minutes in length) which considers one or all of these questions. This competition is open to everyone regardless of religious and cultural background. Submissions can take any shape: monologue, fiction, documentary, poem, animation, art film, essay film etc. Use whatever medium you feel comfortable with. Submissions will be judged on their originality and creativity. We are looking for work which effectively references GCCFS, teaches new audiences about what happened in the concentration camps, and/or illustrates the importance of visual testimony as an educational tool for understanding human rights abuses.
